A DIFFERENT SELF

Sometimes it’s easier to show the face others expect to see - a different version from yourself. Not even that different; but not the “you” that you feel you truly are. It takes courage to find and show the true “you”.

INSTAGRAM YEAR IN REVIEW

In collaboration with @instagram I made 5 illustrations portraying five amazing individuals who raised their voices in 2017 in support of the LGBTQ community; discussions around mental health and recovery; sex and body positivity; and women’s collectives.

UTOPIA

"A utopia (/juːˈtoʊpiə/ yoo-toh-pee-ə) is an imagined community or society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities."

The title of this work expresses the utopia of a world I would like to live in, where people (like the characters I create) can be themselves without meeting resistance from the outside world.

The diptych shows two people standing in front of you very openly, very vulnerable - literally naked. By their hair you initially might assume their gender, but when you look further you might notice your first instinct isn't always right. This is where we get to the point: it actually doesn't matter what gender WE think a person has. We should't have to guess because it doesn't matter; it doesn't value a person. We are all human beings, with the same red blood and the same heart, figuring out what we want in our lives and wanting to love or be loved.

Defining gender should be the least of our problems.

Everyone should be free to find a way to be comfortable in their bodies and dress the way they want to. Or change their body according to their gender identity, to how they feel inside. Because being yourself no matter what, is what's going to make you grow. You'll be a better version of yourself. That's what's going to make you the amazing human being you are.
